Joe Horst and members of The Greenville Theater Project, directed by Anthony Holsten, performed All in the Timing by David Ives, a collection of six one-act comedies.  The performance ran from October 20-28 to help benefit The Family Violence Program of Pitt County.

Gary R. Redding was co-facilitator of the 8th Annual Youth Summit for North Carolina Environmental Justice, Oct. 20-21, at the Historic Franklinton Center at Bricks in Edgecombe County, in Whitakers, NC.  This year's theme was "Head'em Up -- Move'em Out:  Landfills & Hogs." Redding in the keynote said: "It is a great pleasure and honor to welcome you to our 8th Annual Environmental Justice Summit.  With the overwhelming environmental implications of US population growth reaching a stunning 300 million just a few days ago, the ongoing human and ecological catastrophe of the US lead War on Iraqi with the added peril of nuclear testing in North Korea, the unforeseen environmental issues of the still burning chemical plant disaster in Apex, NC., and the upcoming November 2006 mid-term elections, there is much on our minds and much to discuss."  Catherine Smith and Dana Harrington also attended the meeting.

halloweenreading2The blood-red walls of the Tipsy Teapot seemed a fitting setting for EGSO's Halloween reading on October 26th, Thursday evening. According to our ghoulish reporter: "Listeners sipped coffee and hovered over warm pastry to escape the chill outside, and perhaps the chill inside as well from the readings of Bram Stoker, Poe, Neil Gaiman, and local lore.  The audience included EGSO members, English faculty, and downtown locals seeking community in an evening of macabre storytelling."  The readers included Will Cyrus, Cheryl Funderburk, Kate Yuhas, Arrie Brown, Andrea Lupparelli, Jim Kirkland, and Debbie Shoop.

Justin Gross, Leanne Smith, and Bridget Todd attended the ECU Poetry Forum organized by Luke Whisnant on October 11, at the Willis Bldg.  Several poems were "workshopped'" including Justin Gross's "The Dark Days."

Roger Schlobin's customized Datsun 280Z was recently featured in the inaugural issue of Nissan Sport Magazine.

Nominated by Kasey Ross, Reginald Watson was selected to be Faculty Guest Coach for the ECU/Southern Methodist University football game at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on October 21. Coach Watson did well -- the Pirates won 38-21. Congratulations Coach!

kennedy Seth Muse (1912-1976) was born in Cash Corner, NC, and became a well known Washington D.C. news photographer, a member of the White House News Photographers Association and the National Press Club.  Muse took pictures of nearly all the prominent figures in North Carolina politics during his career, and his collection of photographs as part of the Seth Muse papers can now be searched online at http://digital.lib.ecu.edu/special/ead/findingaids/0673/ and on site in Joyner Library. Included in the collection are photographs of Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Vice President Richard Nixon and of leaders of other countries such as Queen Elizabeth of England, and famous people such as Bob Hope, Sophie Tucker, Kim Novak, the fighter Jack Dempsey, and Evangelist Billy Graham.  According to Wm. Joseph Thomas, "Seth Muse was an enthusiastic supporter of East Carolina University. ... He attended ECU in 1937, and married Dorothy Crumpler of Roseboro, N.C., a graduate of East Carolina.  Their son George also graduated in 1963 from East Carolina. ... This image of John F. Kennedy with Carl Sandburg was taken on Oct 25th, 1961 at the White House."  In 1960, during his Presidential campaign, Kennedy visited the ECU campus and delivered an address at Ficklen Stadium on Sept. 17.

The TALGS Conference, scheduled to take place on February 10, 2007 in Greenville, announces a "Call for Papers."  The deadline for submission is January 5, 2007.  The organizers of the conference, Stephen Hinman and Jennie Whitehead, have invited Dr. Donna Christian, President of the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, D.C. to be this year's keynote speaker.  According to Lida Cope, faculty adviser for the Conference, "The purpose of this small, student-run conference is to provide a relaxed but serious environment where graduate students in Applied Linguistics and related fields can have the experience of presenting their work and receiving feedback. The TALGS Conference provides graduate students a forum to showcase their research and experiences. TALGS is committed to bettering the educational experiences of language learners in the community by providing a comfortable environment where an interaction between theory (the researchers) and practice (the teachers) is possible." For more information about submissions and the upcoming conference, see:  http://core.ecu.edu/engl/talgs/conference/conference.htm.
