Joseph Horst's play "Enemies" was recently chosen as a semi-finalist for the WordBRIDGE playwright's laboratory in Clemson, SC, from June 5 - 21.  The laboratory's website describes itself as providing "pre-professional playwrights a place to experiment free of production pressures and with the resources to bridge some of the distance between their internal vision and their final goal -- production."  The laboratory's artistic directors Mark Charney and David White described
"Enemies" as "a world that is gritty, wonderfully paced, ambitious and full of twists and turns."

Congratulations to Brooke Mackenzie Walter, the recipient of the 2009 Paul Farr Memorial Essay Prize.  Her essay "Felicia Hemans' Atypical 'Bride'; Eudora's Latent Byronism" was nominated by Anne Mallory.  Named in honor of former faculty member Paul Farr and established before his death in 1976, the contest encourages excellence in undergraduate expository writing, particularly emphasizing clarity and elegance in prose.  In addition to the honor of winning the award, there is a cash prize of $100.

Ylce Irizarry has accepted a faculty position at the University of South Florida.  She joined ECU in the Fall of 2006.  "I have had the privilege to work with engaging colleagues and students.  I would like to thank all those colleagues, staff, and students who made my time here productive and happy.  While I look forward to my new position, I will definitely miss ECU and Greenville."  She will be teaching Summer Session 1 and should be reachable via her ECU email (irizarryy@ecu.edu) until August 31.
