The Title Poem from Dale Jacobs's Collection

beneath the horse's eye

the hex symbol faded against
the red of the old barn me staring
frozen through the camera lens at
the circle framing star framing painted
ebony horse head from my childhood
focus image memory focus my father
points to the freshly painted head and
star and circle and i smile at him in his
grease-stained overalls smell of the wheat
still in his pantleg barn-red tractor
noisy by the road leading to the field
i can almost see my father and me in his
arms and his father and the homestead
and i am captured too generations
implicated in flesh and i am gone from
the farm the land sold twenty years
before now i am here the barn and
the worn eye of the horse camera adding
another layer to the concentric circles
images within images
click barn circle star horse
etched in black and white
