Welcome to the First-Year Writing Studio!
The First-Year Writing Studio, located in Bate 2005, supports students enrolled in English 1100 and 1200 through individual tutoring sessions with graduate students in English. Committed to helping students become both self-sufficient and responsible writers, graduate student consultants in the First-Year Writing Studio (FYWS) conduct forty-five minute appointments with writers in first year classes, sessions that are structured specifically to keep the decision-making on the shoulders of the student writers.
In these one-to-one consulting sessions, FYWS consultants respond as informed and invested readers, helping students to pay attention to their writing processes and products, set goals to manage their writing processes, and learn strategies for production and revision rather than proofreading or prescribing quick "fix-its" for their work.
FYWS consultants can help students at any stage of the writing process, regularly working with student-writers to help them generate ideas or pre-write, work conceptually on early drafts, globally revise later drafts, think critically about the integration of revisions suggested by peers and instructors, and pay attention to surface and sentence-level editing. One of our goals is to help student writers to develop a new understanding of a collaborative writing process—helping them to develop a language for talking about their writing with others and develop flexible writing strategies that will help them beyond the end of a single session.
