Family Medicine Ribbon Cutting Ceremony - September 23, 2011

In 2011, the Department of Family Medicine opened the doors of the state- of- the- art Family Medicine Center. The Center, poised to become eastern North Carolinas foremost patient-centered medical home and medical training facility, provides the best in healthcare to a 29 county region in eastern North Carolina. The Center serves as a Mecca for talented medical students, family medicine residents and fellows, allied health students and others, by providing a facility, resources and services that enhance training opportunities.

All Family Medicine divisions and services are housed the 112,000 square foot facility. The facility boasts of 60 exam rooms, an urgent care area, four minor surgery/procedure rooms, counseling rooms, physical therapy, radiology, lab, and pharmacy services.

Services offered include urgent care, primary care, prenatal care, minor surgical procedures, sports medicine, geriatrics, family and individual counseling, patient education and nutrition. Hospital and nursing home care are also provided to Family Medicine patients.

Residents, medical students and other learners thrive in rich clinical and educational environment of the Family Medicine Center. By design, the building facilitates interaction and communication. Family Medicine faculty interacts with residents, medical students and other learners in both the clinical and classroom environments. There are two large precepting rooms in the clinical areas, classrooms, an auditorium, and six conference/meeting rooms. Residents have administrative offices located near the faculty physician offices. Like faculty, each resident has a computer at their work desk.

Through a generous gift from Frances J. and Robert T. Monk, the department was able to construct a Geriatric Center in their name. The Geriatric Center allows family medicine physicians, geriatric fellows, residents and medical students to address the health care needs of the older population. The special needs and problems of the older patient provide unique teaching opportunities for future primary care physicians. The Geriatric Center clinical area is designed and equipped to accommodate the geriatric patients. Close proximity to lab, radiology and pharmacy enhance the services provided.
