The First-Year Writing Studio offers individual consulting session to students of ENGL 1100 and 1200. Often, these sessions are initiated voluntarily by the students. Occasionally, the sessions are required by the instructor. Sometimes students schedule sessions in advance; other times, they just drop in. In either case, the consultant's role is not to proofread or correct students' papers but to help them understand the requirements of the assignment, identify specific features of their writing that need improvement, and develop strategies for improving those areas.

Students, what should you bring with you to the appointment?

Goals of the Individual Session
	Help student writers to help themselves
	Teach strategies, not fix-its for a specific paper
	Increase confidence by help writers believe that, with work, they can improve their writing
	Help students organize thoughts, brainstorm ideas, and clarify the focus of their papers
	Leave each writer with some new understanding of writing and thinking processes that will help him or her beyond the end of the session
	Help students answer questions for themselves by providing guidance in how to use a writing handbook, how to edit a paper, how to develop a thesis statement, etc.

In addition to the many things we try to do in a session, there are a few things that we won't do. According to Studio policy, staff members never edit students' work for them, predict the grade they will receive on a particular piece of writing, or criticize the student's teacher
