East Carolina University maintains a strong, long-standing, shared governance structure. The Faculty Senate is the legislative, advisory, and primary faculty governance body representing the general faculty of East Carolina University.
The Faculty Senate provides the means by which faculty are able to fulfill its function with respect to academic and educational policies and other affairs of East Carolina University. The Faculty Senate has oversight of the ECU Faculty Manual and faculty officers are always available for inquiries on issues addressed in the manual.
The Faculty Senate is comprised of elected members of the general faculty and high-level administrators who serve as ex-officio members. The general faculty are the general electorate, and the Faculty Senate is the legislative and advisory body representing the general faculty. The functions, duties, and privileges of these two bodies, stipulated in the ECU Faculty Manual, Appendix A. Faculty Constitution, are exercised under the authority of the University Chancellor.
The Faculty Senate and the various standing Academic Committees on which the faculty serve are the primary media for the essential joint effort of faculty and administration in the government of East Carolina University. The Chancellor and the Chair of the Faculty facilitate communication that enables continuing and effective faculty participation in all aspects of the University community.
