Greenville is a rapidly growing university town of over 50,000 people. The university has 18,000 students and is the third largest university in North Carolina. The community offers the charms of small town living without the frustrations of traffic jams, the anxiety of crime, and the high costs of living associated with large urban areas. The Greenville scene includes Division I collegiate sports (1995 Liberty Bowl Champions), numerous restaurants, excellent shopping, and access to arts and theater. Annual events also include the Michael Jordan Celebrity Golf Classic and the U.S. Open Waterskiing Championship. East Carolina University has a national reputation for its educational programs in music, art, and theater. This results in access to low cost world-class performances. Examples include the performances recently by theDave Brubeck Quartet, the Van Cliburn Gold medalist (Jon Nakamatsu), "Doc" Watson, the Russian National Ballet, the Count Basie Orchestra, Carmen, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra with Amanuel Ax, and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Harry Belafonte and the Minnesota Orchestra. There are also two separate theater series, and numerous other arts performances.

Greenville has increasingly developed a reputation as the retail center for eastern North Carolina. This has led to vigorous growth in retail merchandizing in recent years. The cosmopolitan community reflects the influence of the university. The downtown area also has an active night life for students and young adults.

Recreational opportunities exist in many forms and places. The beautiful beaches of North Carolina are only 90 minutes away. These sandy beaches are relatively unspoiled by commercial development and remain uncrowded. The inland water sounds are as close as 20 minutes and offer excellent opportunities for sailing, boating, fishing, and other water activities. The town has several public parks and numerous free, lighted tennis courts. With the moderate climate in eastern North Carolina, outdoor activities can be enjoyed essentially year round. For residents who enjoy snow skiing, the slopes of Virginia are only a four hour drive from Greenville, and the North Carolina resort areas only five to six hours. All these features resulted in Money Magazine (July 1998) rating Greenville number fourteen on its list of "Best Small Cities" in the Southeast.
