Internal Medicine Residency Program

 • (l ) To provide health care to the 
        people of eastern North Carolina; 
 • (2) To educate minority health care 
        providers;
 • (3) To train primary care physicians. 

Both programs at UHS provides an excellent opportunity for training in primary and tertiary care medicine. Because rural eastern North Carolina lacks adequate numbers of primary care physicians, the clinics and hospital deliver significant primary medical care to the local population. UHS is the only tertiary care center for its service population. Many referrals of complex, interesting, and educational patients are made by area physicians to our facility. Supported by faculty in essentially all necessary subspecialties, this provides an excellent training opportunity.
