In 1986, a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics (Med/Peds) program was
established at University Health Systems of Eastern North Carolina. University
Health Systems (UHS) consists of East Carolina University Brody School
of Medicine and Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The latter is the only community
hospital for local residents (Pitt County = 125,000 residents), and is
also the only tertiary care hospital for eastern North Carolina (approximate
population = 1.25 million). The 750 bed hospital continues to grow, with
110 beds in the Children's Hospital of Eastern North Carolina, 3,000 births
and 50,000 emergency room visits annually.
East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine (ECU-SOM) offers high quality education for medical students and for resident physicians in the various specialties. The school has developed a national reputation for primary care education. The residency curriculum emphasizes the skills and knowledge necessary to train competent primary care physicians. The clinic facilities provide excellent opportunities for ambulatory training. The medicine clinics average 52,000 visits per year, and the pediatric clinics have approximately 41,000 visits. |
