The American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Internal Medicine
first approved the option of combined training in the two specialties in
1967. Such programs allow physicians to qualify for board certification
in medicine and pediatrics after a total of 24 months training in each
discipline (four years total). Initially few programs existed, but the
numbers have increased rapidly in recent years. From only six programs
nationally in 1980, available programs have increased to over 100 programs
in 1999. |
