The primary care population served by the School of Medicine clinics consists of children from Greenville and the surrounding rural areas. Primary care is delivered both in general pediatric clinics, and in resident continuity clinics. Illness-related care and health maintenance care are provided in general pediatric clinic on a daily basis. The general clinic serves as a major site for referrals of complex patients from physicians in the surrounding communities. Residents provide referral services for these patients under the supervision of attending faculty.

Child abuse patients are cared for by faculty who are trained in child abuse management.
Care is usually provided at the child abuse center but also in the general clinic, the emergency department; the inpatient facilities. Residents caring for abused children are well supported.
