Summer is traditionally a time when educational programs "lighten up." Although all of
us in the program have enjoyed a bit of personal time, our activities have been going strong. In
this issue I want to emphasize the extraordinary importance and success of our student leadership
programs. Your program staff have become convinced that student leadership is an absolute
necessity in the success of any program which combines education and service. Their idealism,
their youthful vigor, and their genuine dedication to service virtually demand the attention and
commitment of faculty, administration and community leaders. Very few students entering
schools of health professions lack a strong service commitment, though the educational process
seems to erode their values far too often. We had two spectacular experiences with students this June. First, we hosted the orientation and skill building session for the North Carolina Office of Rural Health as part of the Generalist Program, and involves students from both East Carolina and UNC Chapel Hill. Those of us who were involved with the program left with a tremendous energy charge. As these fine young people dispersed to underserved areas all over North Carolina, I felt a strong sense of pride. |
Later in June, we had the opportunity to host the national leadership program for
Generalist Physicians in Training, a newly formed major section of the American Medical
Students Association. An East Carolina student, Julie Nelson become very involved with
this organization nationally and chaired the program committee this past year. The leadership
training workshop involved seventeen students from all over the country. I personally had the
opportunity to teach and interact with these folks on five or six occasions during the week,
including a wonderful picnic on the Pamlico river. The experience was extraordinary for all of us in the Generalist Program and reading their evaluations was very moving. These folks left with a real sense of mission, and a renewed belief in theirs committment to Generalist careers and service of the underserved. More importantly, they renewed our sense of commitment. We are very hopeful of obtaining to continue this program here at East Carolina over the next several years. All of us believe that it is one of the most rewarding activities in which we have so far engaged. I'll keep you posted. |
