A MISSION OF SERVING THE REGION has guided the Brody School of Medicine for more than 20 years. Today its programs serve as models for the nation. In addition to its outstanding primary care specialties, the Brody School of Medicine offers vigorous subspecialty and surgery programs which are among the best anywhere. Our medical school consistently ranks among the leaders in family medicine and rural medicine in annual U.S. News & World Report surveys of the best graduate schools. Three-quarters of our 2005 graduates matched in primary care residency. The school was founded with a distinctive, three-part mission: to recruit and train physicians in primary care; to recruit and train under-represented minority physicians; and to improve the health of people in eastern North Carolina. While remaining true to those principles, the school has expanded to horizons beyond that early vision. Today it leads the way in compassion and innovation, with researchers investigating stronger models for health care delivery and more reliable cures for lethal diseases. Our faculty have developed techniques such as the Greenville gastric bypass procedure, a model for the nation and the world, and have pioneered the use of new devices, including the robotic arms that have revolutionized minimally invasive surgery. These advancements are possible because of the school's abiding commitment to providing advanced care for patients today, while discovering the treatments of tomorrow. |
