THE FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY is on the forward edge of new model practices. We bring the traditional values of caring and continuity into contemporary settings, to train doctors in the future standard of care in family medicine. Our core values are quality and excellence. We offer new paradigms for the family medicine physician, through education in the new model practice. We believe medical care should be responsive, protective and patient-oriented. We exclusively use an electronic records system. Our program emphasizes evidence-based medicine and other principles of the new model practice, including a personal medical home with integrated care among specialists, continuity and practice-based research. Residents are assigned a panel of patients who remain under their care throughout the program. Patient care responsibilities begin with one half-day a week during the first year and progressively increase to four half-days in the third year. Clinical practice provides a strong continuity experience, as well as the opportunity for one-on-one teaching with faculty Our network of community physicians invites many residents each year for elective rotation. This elective encourages regular interactions with community agencies and leaders, the public health department, school officials, patients and their families. Because the Brody School of Medicine was founded with a mission of training primary care physicians -- and remains dedicated to that goal -- this department figures centrally in the school. Faculty, residents, and staff benefit from supportive relationships. We have a national reputation for innovative programs and strategies, and for overall excellence. Our success is due, in large part, to the strong institutional support we receive. Our program provides rotations in our academic hospital, and within the community in addition to the residents' elective experience. During the first year, residents rotate in the community, including for OB and surgery rotations. Both are community based, one-on-one rotations. We provide additional opportunities for exceptional training in women's health, procedural skills, sports medicine and geriatrics. Our program accepts 10 residents each year. Our predoctoral division leads the department's medical-student teaching effort. Our medical school has among the highest percentage of students in the country electing family medicine residencies in the last decade, more than 60 percent each year. The divisions of research and educational development provide an ongoing program for faculty and fellows. Our diverse faculty comprises more than 20 family physicians, doctors of pharmacy, physical therapists, behavioralists, and nutritionists who regularly receive local and national teaching awards. We conduct several conference series, including a weekly evidence-based medicine conference. Last, we use a team approach to inpatient care, balancing the number of residents at different training levels. Second- and third-year residents have supervisory responsibilities. A daily inpatient morning report is a key component of the longitudinal curriculum. Residents lead the sessions, with backup and support provided by family physicians and clinical pharmacy faculty, as well as by other specialists as needed. Our residents receive hospital and ambulatory training in cardiac care, neurology, pediatrics, surgery and obstetrics/gynecology.
