Medicine/Psychiatry Residency

THE COMBINED RESIDENCY IN MEDICINE/PEDIATRICS emphasizes primary and continuity care and exposure to complex patients, whose conditions may require management in a tertiary care setting. Residents have opportunities to gain advanced knowledge in diagnosing and managing a broad spectrum of diseases and conditions in adults and children.

Graduates of this distinctive program are well-prepared for careers in internal medicine and pediatrics -- or for subspecialty training in either. They are also highly skilled in transitional care for adults with diseases or conditions normally associated with childhood.

Throughout the program's four years, residents rotate between medicine and pediatrics every four months. Blocks of this length were selected so that residents would have an opportunity to gain experience with all seasonal diseases in pediatrics.

During July and August, each service focuses on acute care issues, such as ventilator management, running a code, and fluid and electrolyte management.

The program provides close mentoring by faculty, including subspecialists in almost all areas, who interact with residents on a daily basis. The combined program enjoys the enthusiastic support of both departments.

Its flexible curriculum permits our residents to pursue individual goals within the guidelines of the respective certifying boards. The breadth of opportunities allows residents to learn to care for patients with a wide variety of backgrounds, conditions and health-delivery experiences.

The majority of training occurs on the Brody School of Medicine-Pitt County Memorial Hospital campus, but some experience is obtained at local primary care sites in combined Medicine/Pediatrics and in both specialties. This varied exposure allows residents to acquire the skills and knowledge they need to care for patients from a variety of socioeconomic strata and to learn about different models of medical care delivery.

Nationally, residents who complete Medicine/Pediatrics programs pass the board examinations at a rate equal to or higher than graduates of categorical internal medicine or pediatric programs. Our residents have been very successful in this area.

Also following national trends, the majority of our graduates have entered primary care practice. Those who choose further fellowship training have competed very well for excellent fellowship programs.

All Medicine/Pediatrics residents attend a combined continuity practice weekly with a panel of patients to follow longitudinally. This experience is invaluable in teaching the natural evolution of certain diseases and the basics of health maintenance.

Each resident is promoted to supervising resident after 16 months at the internship level.
