THE INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY is a three-year program during which academics, clinical care, professionalism, and humanity flourish. Residents benefit from a collegial environment and are considered peers.

A broad experience is possible through the diverse patient base at Pitt County Memorial, the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine. Our patient population comes from a 29-county area of about 1.2 million people and our patients present with a mixture of common and rare diseases and conditions.

Residents in internal medicine are given increasing responsibility in the daily management of the adult medicine service at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, a 745-bed state-of-the art center with 161 beds on the medical teaching service, advanced capabilities in diagnostics and a commitment to bedside care. In addition to continuity clinics and block rotations, each subspecialty emphasizes the evaluation and management of ambulatory patients.

Throughout the four years, residents follow a continuity panel of patients. This experience takes place at the Brody Outpatient Center, which provides opportunities in ambulatory care. All residents complete one month of night float each year for inpatient service.

The Department of Internal Medicine offers subspecialty experiences in cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, nephrology, rheumatology, allergy, immunology, pulmonary conditions, dermatology, neurology, endocrinology, infectious diseases and critical care medicine. Electives are available in sports medicine, gynecology and pediatrics.

Through these opportunities, our residents become qualified for primary care, academics, or internal medicine subspecialties.

First-year residents spend nine months on inpatient medical service, four months in general internal medicine and four months in subspecialty services. These are divided among cardiology/CCU and hematology/oncology, neurology and nephrology, and one month in the medical intensive care unit.

The second and third years include electives in medicine and patient care responsibilities as defined by the American Board of Internal Medicine. The resident completes a total of nine months as a supervising resident on inpatient service and one month on the General Medicine Consultation Service.
