THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN PEDIATRICS provides unmatched experiences in state-of-the-art primary and tertiary care pediatrics. Our mission is to prepare general pediatricians to care for a broad range of pediatric patients and to expose residents to a variety of practice issues and subspecialty pediatrics. We strongly support training in community pediatrics. Residents develop an understanding of the responsibilities of a competent pediatrician. We provide residents with the fundamental skills and knowledge required for a life-long education in pediatrics. While we offer a vigorous foundation in generalist and primary care principles, each resident also develops skills in a variety of pediatric subspecialties. As they mature, residents assume an increasing level of responsibility for diagnosis, patient care and communication with parents. On completion of our program, residents are well prepared to enter pediatric practice or to pursue specialty fellowships. Inpatient education takes place at the regional Children's Hospital of University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, the only tertiary care facility in eastern North Carolina for pediatric patients. It includes neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, pediatric sedation services and the full scope of pediatric inpatient care. It is among the best-equipped facilities of its kind in the southeast. As we are the only tertiary care center in the region, our residents are exposed to a broad array of patient problems in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings. The Pediatric Outpatient Center connected to the medical school is a highly functional continuity clinic. Residents are assigned to a continuity day for their entire three years. Two faculty members supervise each session, rotating yearly. Educational sessions specific to continuity care (evaluating growth patterns, developmental assessment, immunizations) are held monthly. Patients are assigned to continuity in a manner that assures exposure to a meaningful range of patient problems. Residents will find additional training opportunities at a nearby pediatric nursing home (the only one of its kind in North Carolina), the child abuse center for eastern North Carolina, local schools and a United Cerebral Palsy day care program. While we emphasize community pediatrics, we provide a wide diversity of experiences and 20-25 percent of our graduating residents continue their education in a subspecialty field. And while our facilities are state-of-the art, and our medical center diverse and growing, our pediatrics residency program is small enough to allow personal relationships to form between faculty and residents. A spirit of camaraderie is shared. Training and learning occurs in a supportive environment where residents are encouraged to develop personally and professionally. Schedules reflect a humane approach to house staff education and we have an active resident adviser and support system. Our program has a full five-year accreditation by the Pediatrics RRC, the longest pediatrics residency accreditation available. For more information visit our Pediatric Residency Website . |
