Moreover, the medical center is a Level I Trauma Center and serves as a cancer, heart, pediatric and surgical referral center for a 29-county region.

For those interested in nursing, East Carolina University has the largest nursing program in the state, with bachelor's, master's and doctorate-level degrees, including programs for nurse practitioners, midwives and certified nurse anesthesiologists. All programs have online components and some are entirely online.

The School of Allied Health Sciences has bachelor's, master's and doctorate-level degrees, including programs in biostatistics, clinical laboratory science, health services and information management, occupational therapy, physician assistant, communication sciences and disorders, physical therapy, rehabilitation and community health.
