Our department is a small, friendly, and dynamic group that focuses considerable energy on our M.S. program. Faculty expertise extends represents a very broad geologic base that includes the classic areas of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary geology, with major support from the areas of geochemistry and geophysics. Our location in the extensive North Carolina coastal system, benefits our strong programs in marine geology, groundwater hydrology and biogeochemistry/geochemistry, paleontology-paleoecology, sedimentation, and stratigraphy. The nearby geologic record includes the Triassic basin deposits, a thick sequence of Cretaceous to Quaternary sediments, and the spectacular modern coastal estuarine, barrier island, continental shelf system of the mid-Atlantic continental margin. We also border the structurally complex Piedmont Province with its crystalline rocks and are near the classic Appalachian Province. The department’s participation in the East Carolina University Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources and in the Ph.D. program in Coastal Resources Management also benefits our research programs.Most students interact very closely with faculty in the classroom and in the many ongoing research projects. As a result of this interaction, our students typically graduate with considerable hands-on field and/or laboratory experience. This experience may include drilling and vibracoring; monitoring and sampling water wells and logging core; running seismic, side-scan and other types of geophysical surveys; participating in oceanographic and estuarine research cruises, geologic mapping; presenting research papers at regional and national meetings; and being co-authors on major publications.
