Humor as an art form rarely attracts the serious attention it deserves. East Carolina University (the Harvard of eastern North Carolina, let's say from I-95 to the ocean) intends to correct this omission with an inaugural humor festival and academic conference. The three-day event features a performance festival that includes everything from stand-up and improv comedy to joke contests and silly songs, and an academic conference in which scholars explore humor in literature, dance, film, theater, therapy, and art. The festival provides a rare opportunity for performers, scholars, and students to interact and enjoy humor in all of its forms.

Keynote Speakers: Jill McCorkle, Andrei Codrescu, and Kinky Friedman
Jill McCorkle, born in Lumberton, NC, delivers southern style humor. Her books include Crash Diet, Ferris Beach, Final Vinyl Days, Carolina Moon, Creatures of Habit, and Cheer Leader. Details and ticket purchase information are [here].

Andrei Codrescu is a celebrated National Public Radio columnist, poet, novelist, essayist, screenwriter, and editor of the literary journal Exquisite Corpse, www.corpse.org. Details and ticket purchase information are [here].

Kinky Friedman is the lead singer of Kinky and the Texas Jewboys, former Texas gubernatorial candidate, and author of 24 and a half novels including Spanking Watson and The Lovesong of J Edgar Hoover. Details and ticket purchase information are [here].
