The APNEP
Citizens’ Monitoring Network was pleased to
welcome a group of young individuals from
Greenville, North Carolina to its growing list of volunteers. A group of sixth graders from C.M. Eppes
Middle School,
led by Mrs. Cheryl Esarey, learned about
the importance of water quality and the surrounding environment.
The students will monitor Green Mill Run,
which is a tributary of the Tar River, over the next three years. The students
were very attentive and full of
questions during the training session.
This is not the first time Mrs. Esarey
has worked with the Citizens’
Monitoring Network. In the fall of 2007,
Mrs. Esarey invited the network to attend “Water Day,”
an all-day event that
offered water quality test demonstrations to students in grades 6
through
8. This event had
approximately 14
stations set up at a nearby park where each represented a group or
agency
that
focused on the importance of water quality.
Some of the stations included the Rapid Response
Team from the North
Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (NCDENR)
and the
Pitt Soil and Water Conservation District of the Pitt County
Agricultural
Center.
