The Institute includes the ECU Diving and Water Safety Office, which draws on technical specialists to provide training, research support, equipment maintenance, and safety oversight for those involved in scientific diving, water-related research, and scuba instruction.  In addition, they oversee the operations and safety of 16 university research vessels, providing maintenance, operators and operator training, and certification, supervision, and support of scientific and recreational activities.

The Institute is home to the ICSP PhD program in Coastal Resources Management (CRM), which provides a unique integrated, multidisciplinary approach to coastal studies that emphasizes the links between science and public policy, while engaging students in the Institute’s research activities. The ICSP CRM program provides the academic basis for students seeking resource management careers in government agencies, private firms, nonprofit organizations, or interdisciplinary educational programs. The Institute also includes the Coastal Water Resources Center.  The CWRC is an interdisciplinary team committed to maintaining and improving the quantity and quality of water resources of the Coastal Plain of Eastern North Carolina.
