Live in a Residence Hall? Connect Using These Steps

One of the ways ECU ensures the integrity of its network is to require a "hard-wired" network connection in residence halls rather than a wireless connection. Another security measure is to require all residence hall users to perform an easy, 3-step process the first time they log on to the network.

Select the appropriate category for your computer system or print the instructions for later use.

Jump to the Appropriate Category:

Glossary:
  • Cisco Clean Access Agent. This security program automatically checks your system's Windows Critical Updates and virus definitions to ensure they are current.
  • Symantec Endpoint Antivirus (PC)/Symantec AntiVirus for Mac. Available as a free download to all enrolled students and employed faculty and staff, Symantec protects a computer system from viruses, worms, Trojan horses and other malware.
  • Live Update. Symantec automatically checks each week for new malware profiles.
  • Windows Critical Updates. Periodically issued by Microsoft, these software patches fix vulnerabilities found in Microsoft software products.
  • http://Download.ecu.edu. Visit this site to download both CCA and Symantec Endpoint software.
System Requirements:
  • A standard Ethernet network card
  • A currently-supported operating system (XP, Vista, Mac OS X)
  • An Ethernet cable. ITCS recommends that students buy at least a 20-foot cable

Connect a Windows PC

Before you begin this process, be sure to UNINSTALL any other antivirus products on your computer.

STEP 1. Install Symantec AntiVirus (Endpoint)

  1. Set up your computer and plug it in to the network jack. Residence halls are not wireless.

  2. Turn on the computer.

  3. Open a browser and navigate to http://download.ecu.edu*. Log in using your PirateID/passphrase (same as Piratemail). You may need to log in using INTRA\Your PirateID if your PirateID alone does not allow you to enter the download center.

  4. From the General Files >> Virus and Security Applications category, click the Get them here! link.

  5. Read the license agreement at the top of the page.

  6. Choose Symantec Endpoint AntiVirus from the General Files >>Virus and Security Applications category.  The download should start and will save the file either to a download folder or to your desktop. Note where the program is saved.

  7. After the download completes, double-click the Symantec Endpoint icon (remember where it was saved!) and follow the prompts to install.

  8. After the program installs, it will automatically run a Live Update.

STEP 2. Check for Windows Critical Updates

  1. Click START >> Programs (or All Programs) >> Choose Windows Update

  2. If your system requires any critical updates for your operating system, they will download. Follow any prompts to install.

  3. Reboot your system to finish the installation.

  4. Check Windows Updates once again to ensure that all available updates have been installed.

Step 3. Install Cisco Clean Access

  1. Again, navigate to http://download.ecu.edu* and log in using your PirateID and passphrase (same as Piratemail) or INTRA\Your PirateID and passphrase.

  2. From the General Files >> Virus and Security Applications category, click the Get them here! link.

  3. Read the License Agreement at the top of the page.

  4. Choose CCA_Agent, version 4.1.10. The download should start and will save the file either to a download folder or to your desktop. Note where the program is saved.

  5. After the download completes, double-click the CCA icon (remember where it was saved!) and follow the prompts to install the program.

Connect a Macintosh Computer

Macintosh computers are not required to install Cisco Clean Access Agent software for residence hall use.

However, Mac users should install the appropriate version of Symantec AntiVirus by following the steps below. Macs are not required to check for Windows critical updates.

Before you begin this process, be sure to UNINSTALL any other antivirus products on your computer.

Install Symantec AntiVirus for Mac

  1. Go to http://download.ecu.edu* and log in using your PirateID/passphrase (same as Piratemail). You may need to log in using INTRA\Your PirateID if your PirateID alone does not allow you to enter the download center.

  2. From the General Files >> Virus and Security Applications category, click the Get them here! link.

  3. Choose the Symantec AntiVirus version appropriate for your computer. Notice that there are three versions; choose the one appropriate for your operating system.
