ECU Search for your Web Site

The Google Mini is a hardware appliance that controls the ECU website search function.

Keyword Matching

To improve user searches for your ECU website, submit a request to have a keyword/URL show as the first item in the ECU search. This way, when the keyword is searched, it is at the top of the page and highlighted in purple. The request must include the following information:

  1. The keywords - 1-3 words at most
  2. The URL
  3. The URL label

For example, Dining Services has requested:

To try this, search the term, dining, from the ECU home page. Notice that the first entry on the search page is, Campus Dining, highlighted in purple.

Keep the following in mind:
  • Keep it simple - only 1-3 keywords at most. All requested keywords must appear in each search request to return the URL.
  • Word case does not matter
  • Do not include the articles (a, an, and or the) or other "joining" words
  • Word order does not matter

    URL Block

A URL can be blocked from a search using the Google Mini appliance. For example, if sensitive data, such as FERPA, HIPAA or copyrighted information, is inadvertently added to a web page, a call to the IT Help Desk (252.328.9866/1.800.340.7081) can have that URL blocked immediately from the ECU search until the information can be removed from the site. URLs can also be blocked for other search engines, such as Google or Yahoo, but this process can take up to 3-5 days.
