Virtual Private Network

A virtual private network (VPN) is a secure connection between a user’s device and internal ECU campus resources. The VPN acts as a secure "tunnel" through which data travels to prevent illegal interception. Users can only connect to secure resources for which they have permission.

For example, after a user completes the initial setup, s/he can connect to a personal Piratedrive, department Piratedrive (with permission), an on-campus computer through the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) (Windows/Mac) or SSH (Linux) protocols within a VPN to access office computer files or complete class assignments.

Please note: Student access through the eduroam wireless SSID provides access to the internet, personal Piratedrive and forward-facing resources like the ECU website, Blackboard, Pirate Port, Piratemail, Pirate Print, etc. For access to additional internal resources, students should utilize the student VPN (piratesvpn.ecu.edu).

Departments should complete the VPN Access form (above, right) for their non-employee sponsored accounts requiring VPN access.

Initial Setup

The first time a user logs in, the Cisco AnyConnect software automatically checks system settings and installs. Subsequent VPN sessions open with a click of the AnyConnect icon in the system tray. Software updates are automatic.

    Mobile Devices

Mobile users download AnyConnect from the app store for their device. Android OS is NOT currently supported. Windows Mobile users connect by logging in to the Remote Access login.

      Good to Know

      • Test your connection while still on campus.
      • Once connected, all ECU computing policies apply.
      • ITCS can only suggest configuration changes to a personal system.
      • ITCS cannot troubleshoot non-ECU equipment/networks such as WiFi, your home network or your Internet Service Provider (ISP)'s connection.
