Access to ECU's Computing Resources Off Campus and for Students through the Wireless Network On Campus

ECU's Virtual Private Network (VPN) acts as a secure "tunnel" through which data travels to prevent illegal interception. Users can only connect to resources for which they already have access.

Users might wish to connect to a personal or department Piratedrive or connect to an on-campus computer through the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) (Windows/Mac) or SSH (Linux) protocols within a VPN to access office computer files or complete class assignments.

  • When off-campus, ECU students, faculty and staff can securely connect to the mapped drives and other resources they use on campus by setting up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) using Cisco AnyConnect SSL VPN client software installed on their machines. This software provides a method for remotely accessing the ECU network from off campus, such as your own home, through a secure connection.
  • When on-campus, students are allowed access to Internet resources, Piratedrive, and forwarding facing ECU web resources like the ECU main website, Blackboard, Pirate Port, Piratemail, Pirateprint, etc through the eduroam wireless network. When the AnyConnect VPN client is launched, it requires a PirateID username and passphrase to verify your identity. Once you have been verified, the program creates an encrypted network connection between you and the ECU network, allowing access to restricted services.

An ECU Sponsor will need to complete a VPN Access form for vendor or non-ECU guests requiring VPN access. ECU sponsorship is required.

All users of the ECU VPN Services are subject to all ECU Information Technology (IT) policies.

Using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN software

After the Cisco AnyConnect software has been installed, you can locate the shortcut to it on your system and open it to connect to the ECU VPN.

  • Faculty/Staff: In the Connect To: field, make sure you enter and select Connect.
  • Students: In the Connect To: field, make sure you enter and select Connect.


If you have the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client installed as per the instructions provided but cannot establish a VPN connection to ECU, please contact the ECU IT Help Desk.
