Dear ITEST Team,
As we approach the holidays, I want to
thank you for your efforts in this first semester of
program implementation. We have made good progress in a
number of areas and it is important for us to continue
this progress in the spring. Specifically our most
important issue for the success and effectiveness of the
grant is to impact science and mathematics instruction
with more hands on applications.
Here is our current plan of action to
work with you and focus on curricular implementation:
Goal 1: Develop specific plans to
promote ITEST curriculum introduction over the remainder
of the 2007- 2008 academic year.
• Action 1: ECU ITEST team members
schedule visits to each high school to discuss needs and
ideas. The goal of the visit is to help us identify
answers to these questions:
o What is the current status of implementation of the
ITEST curriculum? o What issues, needs, and obstacles
are there?
o What plans can be made to introduce ITEST materials in
specific courses and areas over the remainder of the
2007-08 year.
o What can the ECU team do to provide the necessary
support and help?
•
Action 2: Michael Bosse, one of our co PIs from the ECU
Department of Mathematics and Science Education, is
currently reviewing the existing modules to more
specifically identify exactly where various solid modeling,
biomechanics, robotics, and excel exercises can be used to
directly support the SOL goals. Input from visits on
implementation plans completed in Action 1 will be
integrated into this review.
Goal 2: Complete Distribution of
Biomechanics Materials
• Action 1: Stephanie Sullivan and Dana
Espinosa are making appointments to visit the remaining
schools to distribute this equipment. Please let
Virginia know if you have not been contacted to schedule
a visit.
Goal 3: Solve Novell Network Conflict
for Solid Works
We are exploring several approaches to
solve this issue and hope to complete this in the next
few weeks.
• Action 1: Wayne School of Engineering
has worked with TriMech and identified a way to bypass
the Novell problem. We plan to have a team of ECU
Information Technology students visit Wayne and document
the solution. They will then schedule visits to other
locations needing help.
• Action 2: Explore how to set up an XP
network with Solid Works within the Novell network.
• Action 3: Test feasibility of networked
licenses supported from a remote site (such as ECU).
On behalf of all of us on the ECU team,
we thank you for your efforts. As soon as we complete
the visits described in Goal 1, Action 1, Virginia will
process the last $250 payment.
We look forward to a great holiday season
and success in 2008.
Sincerely,
Paul Kauffmann, Ph.D.
