Tips for Dealing with CINAHL via EBSCO

  • Make sure you are using the "Advanced Search" option. Under the search box, you will see a link for "Advanced Search." Make sure that is clicked before you start. You'll know that you are using the advanced search in CINAHL because you will see a checked box above the search box that says "suggest subject terms."CINAHL image

  • The advanced search page should work almost the same as the old CINAHL interface. (For information on searching CINAHL when it works correctly see our Help Sheets and Tutorials.)

  • However, there are problems that you may encounter:

    • You have to clear the search box after each search. It does not clear itself.

    • When you first start searching, you will see limits, but you cannot use them until you have already run a search. (NOTE: It's a good idea to save your limits until the end of the search process most of the time.)

    • Occasionally, the mapping doesn't work correctly or you will try to combine searches and come up with zero results. Wait a bit and try again. Ebsco is buggy right now, but sometimes, time is all that's needed to solve the problem.
