The Hispanic Virtual Reference Desk (HVRD) provides helpful information to North Carolina’s Hispanic population and the organizations that serve them. It includes links to over 400 web sites. When available, links are provided to both the English and the Spanish language versions of the same sites. Unfortunately, not all sites are available in both languages. The HVRD includes links to numerous sites created only in Spanish, as well as to sites that were created only in English. The HVRD uses Google's machine (automatic) translator to translate some of the English-only sites into Spanish. These translations are done “in real time” as you connect to the pages. Machine translators can help you grasp the general intent of the original web page, but do not produce a polished translation. If you wish to send a translated text to another person or use it in correspondence, always explain that you are using an automatic translator by Google and append or reference the original text. This acknowledgement will put the translation into the right context and will help you avoid misunderstandings. When it is important to have an accurate translation, ask a human translator to review the Google translation.
