Day 23: The real work begins
By Andrew Weir (9/24/02)
| Today the ECU field team started to get into the real meat of the site. Sam Blake, Jackie Piero and myself started excavating the three barrels that were located yesterday. Using a transit and an elaborate grid system, the rest of the team worked on mapping the numerous artifact scatters located around the site. The artifact scatters consisted mostly of brick fragments. The bricks were most likely associated with the engine's boilers. |

Barrel #3 exposed |
The barrels were an unexpected discovery. It was surprising that the barrels were in such good condition. The biggest surprise came when the team realized that the barrels were banded with wood witheys instead of iron hoops, which was the trend of the time. Further investigation will be needed to unlock this mystery. |
| The rest of the team worked to expose the turn of the bilge on the port side, near the stern of the vessel. This proved to be quite the task given that the turn was considerably deeper than expected. Things are starting to get exciting, so keep checking back for updates. |
