Day 26: Meet the Press Day!

By Jackie Piero (9/27/02)

Members of the press learn about the wreck of the Montana

Today representatives of various local papers and the state historical office came for a tour of the site. Drs. Corbin, Rodgers, and Dasovich explained the significance of the site and our purpose there. The group looked at the MONTANA and another wreck downriver, watched us work and asked questions before leaving around lunchtime.
Despite the media madness, the crew continued to map the hull. Some members uncovered more of the stern section while others excavated and documented forward sections of the wreck. We learned more about the construction of the paddle wheel and stern.

Students continue to document details of the hull

Students use the dredge the expose timbers beneath inches of silt and clay

Today was the first day we used the water dredge, which is a vacuum powerful enough to suck water, sand, and clay out of the wreck. One student used the dredge to expose flooring while another sifted everything that came out of the hose through a large screen. This way we were able to remove large amounts of material quickly and recover any artifacts came out of the dredge hose. After several hours of dredging and mapping in the afternoon, the team called it a weekend.
