Frank J. Cantelas (MA, East Carolina)
Staff Archaeologist. Cantelas has directed and supervised archaeological surveys of numerous underwater and land sites including the Maple Leaf project in Jacksonville, Florida, the Millecoquins Shipwreck Project in Naubinway, Michigan, and the Watgal Site in Karnataka, India. His research has appeared in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, Proceedings of the Conference on Underwater Archaeology and Social Sciences. He has authored several archaeological reports. He helped develop a cost effective underwater coffer dam system to excavate the Maple Leaf, deeply buried in the St. Johns River in Florida. Cantelas has received research grants from NOAA, NC Sea Grant, the State of Florida, the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History, and other agencies.
