Bermuda 2000 - Underwater Classroom/Guest Lectures

For the second phase of the field project, the ECU team investigated a sample of Bermuda’s submerged maritime heritage.  Over the course of four days the students dove on shipwreck sites dating from the 1680s to the mid-1940s.  The sites ranged from as little as a ballast pile and keelson to intact iron steamers and World War II cargo vessels.  To see photos of the wrecks, click on the appropriate link:

Dr. Barto Arnold from the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M University joined the ECU team for three days to research the blockade runners.  Dr. Arnold and the ECU team dove on the Nola to study its construction techniques and form of propulsion.  Dr. Arnold was also gracious enough to give presentations on both the La Belle Shipwreck Project, and his current research, the Denbigh Project which is a side paddle wheel blockade runner sunk off Galveston, Texas.
