Tane Casserley is an MA candidate in the Program in Maritime Studies at East Carolina University. Tane received his BA and a Graduate Certificate in Maritime Archaeology and History from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His specialties are deep water archaeology, underwater video and photography, as well as, digital mosaics. Tane has participated on numerous deep water projects in the past, most recently on the Year 2000 Monitor Research Expedition.
Gary Byrd is the Diving Safety Officer for East Carolina University. He is an experienced dive instructor and has participated on several archaeology projects with the Program in Maritime Studies. Gary's technical dive experience makes him invaluable in the field and a valued team member on the Monitor Research Expeditions.
Mike Hughes is a MA candidate in the Program in Maritime Studies at ECU. He received his BA in Anthropology from Rhode Island College. Mike worked in Cecil County, Maryland, where he conducted a remote sensing survey on the Elk River. This research is part of his thesis on the British incursions into northern Maryland during the War of 1812.
Doug Jones is a MA candidate in the Program in Maritime Studies at East Carolina University. Doug received his BS in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Doug specializes in the conservation of water logged artifacts. He has assisted in the conservation of artifacts from the Queen Anne's Revenge Shipwreck Project, and interned with the North Carolina Underwater Archaeology Unit. Doug's thesis is on the Black Warrior, a Confederate schooner sunk during the Civil War.
Matt Lawrence is a MA candidate in the Program in Maritime Studies at East Carolina University. A Colorado native, Matt received a BA in Marine Affairs from the University of Miami. His specialization is nineteenth century American steam navigation. Matt is currently researching the archaeology and history of a Tar River steamer for his thesis.
The 25 foot Parker has been with the Program in Maritime Studies since 1998. It has participated in several projects in the past on the Tar River, Pamlico Sound, and the Atlantic Ocean. A sturdy work boat and dive platform, the Parker plans to be in service for many years to come.
