We are excited to have participated in the 2004 Hunt for the USS Alligator, in conjunction with NOAA and the Office of Naval Research. Click here to learn about the project.

The Ocracoke Shipwreck Survey has two main objectives: creation of a database of submerged cultural resources along North Carolina's Outer Banks, and educational outreach to the public.

This website is designed to assist students, teachers and our community in understanding the processes involved in creating this database. Underwater archaeology, historical research, and remote sensing technologies are used first to locate and identify submerged cultural resources (shipwrecks & sites) off the coast of North Carolina. We must then assess their research potential and historical significance.  To learn more or to find answers to any of your questions concerning the Ocracoke Project email Project Director Dr. Timothy Runyan at RunyanT@mail.ecu.edu.
