The Statistics programs offered by the Department of Mathematics are the B. A. in Mathematics with an Option in Statistics, a graduate Certificate in Statistics, the Minor in Statistics, and the graduate Minor in Statistics. Undergraduate students completing Mathematics 3308 (Mathematical Statistics II) and Mathematics 5031 (Applied Statistical Analysis) obtain the core statistics background for graduate work in statistics or jobs in actuarial science or other fields requiring training in statistics as well as mathematics. For preparation for graduate work in mathematical statistics, Mathematics 5801 (Probability Theory) is also recommended. Mathematics 4201 (Introduction to Stochastic Processes), Mathematics 5131 (Deterministic Methods in Operations Research) and Mathematics 5132 (Probabilistic Methods in Operations Research) are among the electives offered to students interested in statistics. Many other useful applied statistics
courses are available at Graduate students begin their study of statistics with Mathematics 5801-6802 (Statistical Inference). Courses in the linear model, stochastic processes and other topics are available when there is adequate demand. Mathematics 5031 does not count toward the M.A. in Mathematics, but it is a good introduction to applied statistics for graduate students. |
