 Fall 2006 - Spring 2007 Educational Outreach

In 2006, the Maritime Studies Association began increasing its efforts to reach out to the community to promote awareness of our unusual and exciting career path. We have developed a short class targeting middle school students introducing the field of maritime archaeology. Our aim is to engage the students and introduce them to the idea of investigating people in the past through the objects left behind.

The basic class is approximately 45 minutes long and introduces the basic steps in conducting an archaeological project, emphasizing how we learn about people through this process. We are happy to work to accommodate requests for a focus on specific topics; e.g. the maritime culture of North Carolina, mapping techniques for an underwater project, or other topics appropriate for the curriculum for a specific class.

If you would be interested in hosting one of the Maritime Studies Association presentations, please contact us at mmd1214@ecu.edu. Graduate students will be available for presentations for the 2006 – 2007 school year anytime after October 15, 2006. We look forward to hearing from you and to introducing your students to the exciting world of maritime studies.
