Dr. David E. Long Dr. Long came to East Carolina University at the beginning of the 1995-96 school year, after a career as a trial lawyer and assistant state attorney in Florida. He is a graduate of the Ohio State University with a B.A. in political science and the Ohio State University College of Law with a J.D. After twelve years spent in the courtroom, he returned to Florida State University where he received an M.A. and Ph.D. in history. His first publication was The Jewel of Liberty: Abraham Lincoln’s Re-election and the End of Slavery, which was nominated for a number of prestigious awards including the Pulitzer Prize. His work is widely recognized as the leading work on the 1864 presidential election, an event he described as the most important election in American history. He has since gone out to write about the 1860 presidential election and a number of other events of Lincoln’s presidency. He has played prominent roles in bringing to light the Lincoln summer White House that largely due to his efforts has been declared a national treasure and is now being restored to its 1862 appearance, and is a member of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission that is orchestrating the events for the bicentennial celebration of the birth of the nation’s 16 th president. He has often been seen on C-Span, PBS, Discovery, and the Channel as an expert commentator on Lincoln’s presidency and the Civil War.
