3D
While in 2D animation, the computer aids in calculating the motion of objects, in 3D animation the computer also calculates lighting and perspective.
Typically in 3D, geometry based models are developed and textured, or skinned to make them look more real.
Ironically, the Tetrahedron model on the right is faux 3D in Flash. A true 3D model of a tetrahedron was used for a reference, while the 2D shapes are manipulated to appear 3D. Click on "Help" in the upper right of the model.
