Mozart's setting of the classic tale of Idomeneo, King of Crete, contains some of his most innovative and beautiful music. Its premiere in 1781 established him as one of the finest dramatic composers of the 18th century. The opera explores humanity's ongoing struggles in balancing duty, honor, faith, family, and love.
