WOMENFOLK | WOST 3510 & 6100 | SPRING 04 | TU/TH |11–1215
Dr. Karen Baldwin [baldwink_@_mail.ecu.edu]

We will undertake a fascinating exploration of the traditional cultural spheres of womenfolk.

Readings, films, guest appearances, class discussion, writing intensive assignments, term projects and fields trips (when possible) will all contribute to our rich experiences as we encounter the cultural lives and arts, the influential stereotypes and the scholarship of womenfolk. We will study how folklore serves women's enculturation and also enables women to express themselves, assert their identities, and handle the concerns of living.

Topics this term will include women (story)tellers, women and family ritual, women healers, women folklorists, women and food, women making music, women as stereotypes, women at work, women's material arts, women and belief.

Materials will feature women in multiple ethnic cultures of the U.S., including Native American Indian, Anglo-European, African/Caribbean, Asian, Hispanic/Latina.
