FOLKLORE AWARDS PROGRAM

The North Carolina Folklore Awards program supports the work of individuals and groups that contribute to the transmission and appreciation of cultural traditions in our state. It also encourages the study and presentation of state folklife.

The Society's Brown-Hudson Folklore Award recognizes persons who have contributed in a special way to the appreciation of North Carolina folklife. Past winners include playwright Paul Green, African-American quilters Lillie Lee and Jennie Burnett, folk potters Nell Cole Graves and Burlon Craig, teachers Cratis Williams and Charles G. Zug, musicians Doc and Merle Watson, Etta Baker, and Tommy Jarrell, writers Richard Walser and John Parris, and folklife advocates Mollie Blankenship and George Holt.

Our Community Traditions Award recognizes the contributions of a group or organization to the continuation and appreciation of state folklife.

To nominate a person for the Brown-Hudson or Community Traditions award, submit a completed nomination form in Word or PDF format with supporting materials to the Society's Second Vice President, Christine A. Whittington, James Addison Jones Library, Greensboro College, Greensboro, NC 27401, or email nominations to cwhittington@gborocollege.edu.
