ECU announces fall enrollment figures
(Sept. 9, 1998)
Fall semester enrollment at East Carolina University is 17,803, the second-highest number ever. The number is down slightly from last year's record of 17,846.
The average SAT score of first-time freshmen is 1019, up from 1014 a year ago and one of the highest average SAT scores ever recorded by an incoming ECU class. The enrollment figures are preliminary, based on counts taken last week, but they are not expected to change significantly. Official figures are compiled in October.
The student body this fall includes 14,635 undergraduates, 2,865 graduate students, and 303 medical students, compared with 14,701 undergraduates, 2,848 graduate students and 297 medical students a year ago. There are 10,561 women and 7,242 men. In 1997, the numbers were 10,485 women and 7,361 men. This fall's enrollment includes 2,165 African-Americans, up from 2,069 last year.
The total also includes 15,564 North Carolina residents and 2,239 out-of-state students. Last year the comparable figures were 15,533 North Carolina residents and 2,313 out-of-state students.
