Annual awards given by Alumni Association

(Apr. 14, 2000)   —   The ECU Alumni Association has picked winners for its annual Distinguished Service, Honorary Alumni and Volunteer of the Year awards. The presentations were made at the awards luncheon on April 15. Recipients of the 2000 Distinguished Service Awards are alumni Beth Ward and Henry Hinton of Greenville. Ward, who has three degrees from ECU (1961, 1966, 1986) is a local educator and Pitt County Commissioner. Hinton, class of 1976, owns radio stations WCZI-FM and WGPM-FM in Greenville and is a talk show host. Both are being recognized for uncommon and outstanding service to the Alumni Association and the university. Chancellor Emeritus John Howell and his wife Gladys of Greenville, N.C. Sen. Bob Martin of Bethel, and Richard Armstrong of Swansboro, a retired engineer who established the first endowed scholarship in the School of Art, are all being made honorary ECU alumni. The status is extended to individuals who did not attend ECU but have adopted the university as their own through uncommon and outstanding service, commitment and loyalty. Volunteer of the Year winners are Rick and Debi Niswander of Greenville, Robert Frankel, Dan Schisler of Winterville, Anne Kitchin of Greenville, Louis Clark of Greenville and Phil Tetterton of Charlotte.
