ECU plans MLK day activities

(Jan. 10, 2001)   —   East Carolina University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance on Monday, Jan. 15, will include a candlelight vigil, a march through the campus and a speech by Chancellor Richard Eakin.
The march will begin at 6 p.m. at the crest of College Hill Drive in front of Belk Residence Hall. From College Hill the marchers will walk to Mendenhall Student Center to attend a program in Hendrix Theater.
"As the guest speaker for this year's MLK program, Dr. Eakin is an incredibly important choice," said Dr. David Dennard, an ECU history professor and one of the organizers for the MLK program.
"That he accepted the invitation reveals correctly, I believe, his great interest in encouraging all of us, especially students, staff and faculty at ECU, to involve ourselves in activities that will continually prepare us to advance humanity's best hopes," Dennard said.
"He will be an excellent speaker for our program."
ECU’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration is sponsored by the MLK Observance Committee, the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center, the Student Union Cultural Awareness Committee, Office of Intercultural Student Affairs and Allied Blacks for Leadership and Equality. The public is invited to attend.
