ECU to host symposium of NC Youth issues

A leading child welfare expert and two high ranking state officials will open a two-day human services symposium on Thursday at East Carolina University.
Dr. Ira M. Schwartz, the dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania, will offer some of his ideas for dealing with teenage pregnancy, youth violence and other issues at 7:30 p.m. in ECU’s Mendenhall Student Center. The title of his presentation is “Finding Solutions for North Carolina’s Youth.”
Sen. Marc Basnight, president pro tem of the N.C. Senate, and Robin Britt, secretary of the N.C. Department of Human Resources, will follow Schwartz’s address with their responses.
The public is invited to attend.
Sponsored by the ECU School of Social Work and the N.C. Advocacy Institute, the symposium continues on Friday with a second address by Schwartz and additional remarks by Gwen Chunn, director of the N.C. Division of Youth Services. Friday’s sessions will also address the symposium’s theme “Finding Solutions for Eastern North Carolina’s Youth.”
Schwartz is the former director of the Center for the study of Youth Policy at the University of Michigan. He is considered a leading authority on youth policy and is featured regularly in national publications and on major television networks.
