Broad to be honored at ECU Educators Hall of Fame

GREENVILLE, NC   (Oct. 4, 2005)   —   UNC President Molly Corbett Broad will be honored Saturday at East Carolina University at the Educator’s Hall of Fame, along with 20 other award recipients.

Sponsored by ECU’s College of Education, the annual induction ceremony honors professionals who have made distinguished contributions to the field of education. Both Broad and ECU Chancellor Steve Ballard will speak at the 10 a.m. ceremony at A. J. Fletcher Recital Hall.

"President Broad has been instrumental in keeping teacher preparation and pre-K-12 initiatives as strategic priorities of the UNC System,” said Marilyn Sheerer, dean of ECU’s College of Education. “She has been a champion for public education at all levels and models the kind of leadership we need to address our challenges."

Broad, who has served as president of the 16-campus university system since 1997, will retire this winter. Erskine Bowles, a Charlotte business executive and former Clinton-era chief of staff, will replace Corbett Jan. 1.

Now entering its seventh year, the Educators Hall of Fame doubles as a scholarship program, which will be offered in the spring.
