Two named top sleep physicians
ECU physicians Drs. Sunil Sharma (pictured) and Ronald Perkin have been named two of the top physicians in the country for treating sleep disorders. Sharma is an assistant professor of medicine at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and director of the ECU Sleep Disorders Center. Perkin is chair of the Department of Pediatrics and co-director of the Vidant Children's Hospital. Read more...
ECU joins national inventors academy
ECU has been named a charter member of the National Academy of Inventors. The academy, founded at the University of South Florida in 2010, recognizes investigators who translate their research findings into inventions that may benefit society. The group aims to “push forward this idea of invention and innovation and translating our research to new products and new ideas for our communities,” said Paul Sanberg, president of the academy. Students inspired to save $100,000
ECU College of Business professor Mark Weitzel, pictured, with colleagues Bill Pratt and Len Rhodes challenged students in personal finance classes to save money through changes in spending behaviors. Together the 500 students saved more than $130,000. Students were asked to submit any changes in their behavior that resulted in spending less and saving more ̶ even securing a paid internship or part-time job counted. Read more….
Nursing supports national campaign
ECU’s College of Nursing has joined a national campaign in support of active and returning military members, veterans and their families. Through Joining Forces, an initiative led by the White House and First Lady Michelle Obama, ECU nursing will raise awareness and educate students about the health and social needs of service members and their families. Many are returning home with post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Read more...

McRae to address spring graduates
An East Carolina University graduate who has committed more than 35 years to improving healthcare in eastern North Carolina will deliver the keynote address at the university’s spring commencement. Vidant Health Chief Executive Officer Dave McRae will speak May 4 during the ceremony, which begins with a processional at 9 a.m. in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Close to 3,800 students are expected to graduate, including 73 from the Brody School of Medicine. Read more...
ECU honors Holocaust victims
The Volunteer and Service-Learning Center at ECU hosted the 9th annual Holocaust Awareness Day April 17 on the campus mall. The event was held as part of national Days of Remembrance established by the U.S. Congress. Faculty, staff, student and community volunteers read the names of Holocaust victims and luminaries were lit to honor the victims. Fifty-four volunteers participated in reading names and other activities during the Holocaust Awareness event. Read more...
Time to relax, go barefoot on the mall
The 33rd Barefoot on the Mall will be held April 19 from 2 to 8 p.m. Established in 1979, the event offers an opportunity for students to enjoy a day of live music, prizes, crafts, vendors and novelty entertainment. As the name implies, the event was designed as a festival that students could attend relaxed and barefoot. Musical guests will include New Boyz, Matt Phillips and the Philharmonic, Thick as Thieves and Ethnographers. Read more…

The ECU Volunteer and Service-Learning Center is hosting the 9th annual Holocaust Awareness Day from 7 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. April 17 on the campus mall. The event is held as part of national Days of Remembrance established by the U.S. Congress. Faculty, staff, student and community volunteers are needed to read the names of Holocaust victims. Students to select memorial sculpture
ECU students are urged to vote by April 30 for one of three sculptures that will stand as the centerpiece of a new memorial garden honoring students who have died during the semester. The ECU Student Memorial Garden is located between the Erwin Building and Ledonia Wright Cultural Center. The selected sculpture will be cast nine feet high and placed in the garden after students have identified their preference through One Stop voting. Read more...
Remembering coach, champion Mark Lenzi
Olympic gold medalist and former East Carolina University diving coach Mark Lenzi died April 9 in Greenville. He was 43. Lenzi’s alma mater, Indiana University, made the announcement. Lenzi represented the U.S. at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, where he won the gold medal on the 3-meter springboard. After a brief retirement, Lenzi returned to the sport in 1995 and qualified for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics on the 3-meter springboard, where he earned a bronze medal. Read more...

The ECU Program Prioritization Committee is holding campus forums from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, April 9 - 12, at Mendenhall Student Center to solicit feedback on potential scenarios for reorganization. Easter fun at ECU
Face-painting, games and hidden Easter eggs were among the prizes awaiting children who attended an Easter Egg Hunt at the East Carolina University mall April 1. The event was the 11th Annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored byPhi Sigma Pi fraternity. Children of all ages were invited to enjoy fun and games beginning at noon, followed by the Easter egg hunt at 1 p.m. View slideshow from the event.
Shroud of Turin expert to speak
Shroud of Turin expert Russ Breault will speak at ECU at 8 p.m. April 11 in Hendrix Theatre.
Breault will present The Shroud Encounter, a CSI-style, multi-media presentation that will examine the mysteries, science and controversy surrounding the world’s most analyzed artifact. Breault has been researching and lecturing on the shroud for 25 years. He has been featured in several national documentaries including “Mysteries of the Ancient World” on CBS and on the Discovery Channel, Learning Channel and National Geographic. Read more...
Head shaves to benefit cancer research
At least eight people have signed up for a head shave to raise funds that support children with cancer, at the St. Baldricks Foundation event set for 2 p.m. March 31 at the Brody School of Medicine. Volunteers may also donate or serve on a fundraising team. Former ECU football player Spencer Hampton, diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, is among the honorees at the event. Read more...

Heavy debt found with college grads
ECU social work professor Dr. Intae Yoon found high levels of debt among college graduates in research published in the Journal of Social Work Education. In a study titled “Debt Burdens among MSW Graduates: A National Cross-Sectional Study,” Yoon examined the debt load of master of social work graduate students. One quarter of respondents said they owe at least $40,000 in educational loans, he said, and 30 percent had borrowed at least $30,000 of their total college expenses. Read more...
Edible Books event debuts at Joyner
The inaugural Joyner Library Edible Books Festival at ECU will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. March 31 in the library's second floor gallery area. The event celebrates books, food and the people who love them. Registered participants are asked to create and bring a piece of edible art related to a book. The edible art may pun on a book's title, resemble a book or refer to a scene or chapter. Prizes will be awarded in several categories. Register by March 26. Read more…
Spring Fest opens Recreational Complex
ECU will open the 2012 season at the North Recreational Complex with celebration of Spring Fest from 3 to 6 p.m. March 15 at the complex. Free food, live music, games, activities, prizes and a No Quarter Olympics will be part of the celebration. First round NCAA college basketball tournament games will be shown in the boathouse. New Music Festival set for March 14-18
The ECU Symphony Orchestra will perform March 17 as part of the 12th Annual New Music Festival at ECU. The festival runs March 14 -18, featuring music by contemporary composers. The New Music Festival brings new musical ideas into the classroom, performance spaces and the community. This year’s event brings together composers from ECU and throughout the world to have compositions performed by acclaimed guest artists and hundreds of School of Music students. Undergraduate art on display in March
The ECU School of Art and Design Undergraduate Exhibition is scheduled for March 1 – 31 at the Wellington B. Gray Gallery on campus. The exhibition will include works selected from more than 600 undergraduate submissions, with an awards ceremony scheduled for 5 p.m. March 1 in Speight Auditorium, Jenkins Fine Arts Building. Seven East Carolina University women graduated in December from BRIDGES XIX, an intensive academic leadership and professional development program for university women. ECU creative writing graduate student Michael Kent Brantley has published the first issue of an online fiction journal entitled "What the Fiction." The journal is available at www.whatthefiction.com. ECU helps to 'Give Kids a Smile'
ECU dental students and faculty members participated in the 10th annual Give Kids a Smile Day Feb. 3. Organized by the East Central Dental Society and the Pitt County Health Department, the event provides free dental care for children aged 6 - 12 with no dental insurance and no dentist of record. Approximately 127 children were scheduled for dental visits. Read more...

ECU talent displayed at Laupus Library
'Art As Avocation,' a new series of exhibits showcasing the artistic talents of faculty, staff and students from the ECU Division of Health Sciences, kicks off Jan. 31 at Laupus Library. College of Nursing Professor Emeritus Lou Everett is the featured artist for the inaugural event. New artists will be introduced every six to eight weeks. Everett's exhibition will expand upon her work created for Nursing's 50th anniversary, including watercolor impressions of the Division of Health Sciences, ECU and eastern North Carolina. Pirates prepare for Polar Bear Plunge
The 16th annual Polar Bear Plunge is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at the ECU Student Recreation Center. All ECU students, faculty and staff are invited to jump into the icy waters of the outdoor pool. The first 1,000 jumpers will receive a free event t-shirt. Students are also entered into a drawing for prizes including the grand prize, a 3-foot stuffed Polar Bear donated by Coca-Cola. ECU events honor Martin Luther King Jr.
A Jan. 17 presentation by civic leader, commentator and scholar Dr. Julianne Malveaux, president of the Bennett College for Women, is among the events planned for ECU's commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Also planned is the annual MLK Day of Service on Jan. 16, at which time the ECU Volunteer and Service-Learning Center invites volunteers to honor King through community service. Read more….
ECU resource for group meal preparation
East Carolina University family medicine professor Dr. Kathryn Kolasa, along with ECU graduate students Rachel Ward and Jill Jennings, developed a 37-page guidebook on food safety and nutrition for group meal preparation. The Helping Hands resource was developed in response to requests from local agencies, as a guide for volunteers who help provide meals for soup kitchens, homeless shelters, cancer lodges and other facilities.
