LESSONS IN CALLIGRAPHY: Nobu Asaoka (standing), who teaches Japanese at ECU, offered Japanese calligraphy workshops for ECU faculty, staff and students Oct. 10. Above, Asaoka helps ECU staffers Joyce Joines Newman, instructional tech consultant at the Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, (left) and Susie Keene, administrative officer in Materials Management, learn a few strokes. Three free sessions of the workshops were offered by ECU’s Japanese Language Program. Workshop participants learned to appreciate good Japanese calligraphy, and then enjoyed hands-on training in basic techniques. By the end of the sessions, participants were taught to write a word using their choice of characters. (Photo by Erica Plouffe Lazure)
