|ECU students and parents need all the help they can get moving into the dorms when the students return to campus August 17 through Aug. 20 for the fall semester. ECU’s Housing services is organizing volunteers to help with the effort. Contact Aaron Lucier at 328-2758 or email@example.com to volunteer. When 5,100 East Carolina University students move into the dorms next month, they’ll probably need a little extra help with their luggage.
ECU Housing and Dining Services is looking for students, faculty and staff to help move them in Aug. 17 through Aug. 20, said Aaron Lucier, director of operations for ECU’s Housing and Dining Services.
“We’re inviting the campus community to welcome the next generation of students,” he said. “We’re trying to create more random acts of kindness.”
Now entering its second year, the idea came from members of the ECU Parents Council, who had heard of a similar program at UNC-Wilmington. Last year, 40 faculty, students and staff volunteered for a day to help move in the freshman class. Lucier is optimistic more people this year will volunteer during the four-day move-in period.
“We give folks name tags. We find the families are very happy to have the help,” he said. “The randomness of it is a nice feature; it’s not a given. It’s an extra.”
Lucier said ideally, volunteers will assemble themselves in groups of 10 for three-hour shifts. Move-in times are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“A team of ten is our goal,” he said. “If we get two teams of five, we’ll pair them together.”
Volunteers can expect to open doors, do some light lifting, and of course, welcome students and their families to campus. All dormitories are air-conditioned and water will be available on-site. Contact Lucier at firstname.lastname@example.org or (252)328-2758 to register.
